What is Dragon DNA?
At Bell Park, we’ve created a tailored junior development program called ‘Dragon DNA’ — a holistic approach to coaching that builds skills, character, and club culture from the ground up. Designed by experienced football minds and overseen by our Junior Development Coordinator (JDC), the program ensures consistency and quality in the way we develop players from Under 9s to Under 18s.
How It Works
🐉 14 Progressive Categories
We’ve structured the program into 14 key categories, each matched to an age group from U/9 to U/18. This ensures that each child receives development appropriate to their stage, while building towards a shared long-term goal — preparing them not just to play, but to excel.
🏉 Fundamental Football Skills
Every age group focuses on a set of core football fundamentals. These are carefully selected to ensure players develop the essential skills needed for their level, while introducing new ones as they progress. It’s not just about kicking and handballing — it’s about smart decision-making, spatial awareness, and game understanding.
🤝 Behaviour and Representation Model
We’ve established a simple, age-appropriate behavioural model that helps players represent themselves, their team, and the club with pride — both on and off the field. This helps create a culture where effort, respect, and sportsmanship are part of our identity.
📋 75-25 Coaching Philosophy
We encourage a 75% game sense / 25% instruction coaching approach, designed to empower players to learn through play. This method is applied slightly differently depending on whether the team is in a competitive or non-competitive age group, but the core idea remains: let the kids play and learn.
🧠 Junior Development Coordinator (JDC)
At the heart of the program is our JDC, who ensures consistency across teams, provides mentoring to coaches, and supports the rollout of the ‘Dragon DNA’. This role is critical in aligning all junior teams with the club’s long-term development goals.
🧑🏫 Support for Coaches
We know our club thrives because of our dedicated volunteers. That’s why our JDC works closely with every junior coach to provide training, resources, and on-field support. We’re not just giving our coaches a plan — we’re giving them the tools and guidance to bring it to life.
